Within-Species Trait Variation Can Lead to Size Limitations in Seed Dispersal of Small-Fruited Plants

چکیده
The inability of small-gaped animals to consume very large fruits may limit seed dispersal the respective plants. This has often been shown for large-fruited plant species that remain poorly dispersed when large-gaped animal are lost due anthropogenic pressure. Little is known about whether gape-size limitations similarly influence small-fruited can show a variation in fruit size within species. In this study, sizes 15 were compared with gape their 41 dispersers temperate, old-growth Bia?owie?a Forest, Poland. effect on consumption was assessed at level, and subset nine species, also individual subindividual level (i.e., same individual). addition, subset, fruit-seed trait relationships investigated determine restricted access results fewer or smaller seeds per fruit. Fruit widely varied among (74.2%), considerably (17.1%), smallest extent individuals (8.7%). Key disperser should be able all (except those largest-fruited species), even if they only 28-55% available fruits. traits positively correlated eight out indicating will result 49% (in one) 16–21% three species) by than main dispersers, respectively. Our characteristic increases connectedness frugivores plants individuals. Simultaneously, however, leads induce selective pressures become extinct. study emphasizes mechanisms which limitation shape plant-frugivore interactions co-evolution

Seed dispersal of fleshy-fruited environmental weeds in New Zealand
Fruit-eating animals play a key role in spreading non-native environmental weeds, via seed ingestion and subsequent dispersal. We reviewed available information on dispersal of fleshy-fruited environmental weeds in New Zealand. We found almost a third (32.9%) of 295 environmental weed species in New Zealand have fleshy fruits adapted for internal dispersal by animals. Fruiting phenology differs...
متن کاملEndozoochorous seed dispersal of plant species in semi-steppe rangelands
During last two decades studies on endozoochorous seed dispersal indicated that a large numbers of plant seeds are potentially dispersed and suceefully germinated via animal dung. However, very little is known about the relative importance of endozoochory in germination success of plant species in semi-steppe rangelands. In this paper we examined dung germinating seed content, seed deposition p...

متن کاملHigh species diversity in fleshy-fruited tropical understory plants.
Key innovations may increase the number of taxa in a clade that possesses the proposed innovation in comparison to its sister group that lacks the trait through either increased speciation or reduced extinction rates. Comparing sister clades across several independent lineages provides statistical support that the trait has increased species diversity. Previous studies have indicated that there...
متن کاملVertebrate Dispersal of Seed Plants through Time
■ Abstract Vertebrate dispersal of fruits and seeds is a common feature of many modern angiosperms and gymnosperms, yet the evolution and frequency of this feature in the fossil record remain unclear. Increasingly complex information suggests that (a) plants had the necessary morphological features for vertebrate dispersal by the Pennsylvanian, but possibly in the absence of clear vertebrate di...
